Jim,

I am not sure if you've been able to resolve this yet or not.
Check if you are using PAM in your authentication on the AIX
box. You may need to compile sudo w/o PAM support, or alter
your PAM config files to get it working right.

We recently ran into the same symptoms and we ended up having
to recompile with PAM support and tweak the PAM libraries &
conf files.
