Redirecting input like this is fine as long as you have read permission on the file. Remember, your shell does all file redirection and pipes, not sudo. Some versions of makemap had a problem whereby they wouldn't create a new file, I suppose that could be it. This doesn't really sound like a sudo problem. - todd
