How does sudo authenticate??

Hi all,

Just need to clarify whether I got it right.

Authentication done by sudo when user is prompted for password is via 
the users entry in  the /etc/password.

However,  if the password prompting is disable for reason,  how then 
does sudo authenticate since there is no more prompting of the 
password.
