Arron -

Actually - looks like I was using system that had some weird links for 
OpenLdap. I've gone to one of our more vanilla systems and had a much 
better experience:
SunOS largo 5.8 Generic_108528-27 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-1

Works just great with the Native LDAP libraries (newer version though 
including patch 108993-31)

I'll report experiences with other version as well.
