The latest stable version of sudo is 1.8.1. There are also binary
packages available at http://www.sudo.ws/sudo/download.html#binary
The sudo 1.7.x branch is in maintenance mode and will only receive
bug fixes (not new features). The sudo 1.6.x branch is no longer
supported. Note that there are a lot of changes in sudo 1.8.x
compared to earlier versions. You should always read the UPGRADE
file (located in the doc directory for sudo 1.8.x) when upgrading
sudo.

That indicates a patchlevel.
