I see the following with the sudo-ldap (1.8.3p1-1ubuntu3) package
shipped with 12.04:

    sudo: ldap_start_tls_s(): Connect error

The sudo 1.8.5rc3 package from www.sudo.ws works without an error.
There were a number of ldap issues fixed recently.
