I'm about to release 1.7.0rc3 but I want to make sure that it
fixes defaults-related the issues reported by Chris O'Regan first.

Barring unforseen events I will release 1.7.0rc3 this week and, if
there are no problems reported, do a general release of 1.7.0 by
the end of November.
